Know More About Procedure & Surgery
Kidney Cancer Surgery (Radical Nephrectomy) in India
Radical nephrectomy removes a kidney that contains cancer, together with the fat and covering around it, and nearby lymph nodes when they are enlarged. In India it is done mostly by laparoscopic (keyhole) or robotic surgery by senior uro-oncology teams, with a short hospital stay and a fast return to normal life.
📖 What is a Radical Nephrectomy?
The kidneys filter the blood and make urine. The most common kidney cancer in adults is renal cell carcinoma (RCC), which accounts for about 9 in 10 kidney cancers; the clear-cell type is the most common. Today, more than half of kidney cancers are found by chance on an ultrasound or CT scan done for another reason, often while still small and curable.
In a radical nephrectomy, the surgeon removes the whole kidney with the surrounding fat and its covering layer (Gerota’s fascia). The adrenal gland is removed only if the tumour involves it, and lymph nodes are removed when scans show they are enlarged. For small tumours, a partial nephrectomy that removes only the tumour and saves the kidney is usually preferred; radical nephrectomy is chosen for larger or centrally placed tumours, or when the tumour has grown into the kidney vein.

🩺 Conditions Treated
⚠️ Symptoms That May Need Evaluation
- ➤Blood in the urine, even once and without pain
- ➤A dull ache or pain in the side or back that does not go away
- ➤A lump in the side or tummy
- ➤Tiredness, weight loss or loss of appetite
- ➤Fever or night sweats without infection
- ➤Anaemia or a high calcium level on blood tests
- ➤A swelling of veins around the testicle (left varicocele) in men
- ➤A kidney mass found by chance on ultrasound or CT
🔬 Tests Before Treatment
| Test | Why it is done |
|---|---|
| Contrast CT (or MRI) of the abdomen | Shows the tumour size, position, vessels, lymph nodes and whether it has entered the kidney vein. |
| CT scan of the chest | Kidney cancer most often spreads to the lungs. |
| Blood tests: creatinine, eGFR, blood count, calcium, LFT | Kidney function and fitness for surgery. |
| DTPA renal scan (split function) | Shows how much each kidney contributes, important when the other kidney is weak. |
| Urine test and cytology | Looks for blood or cancer cells from the urinary tract. |
| ECG, echo and chest X-ray | Heart and lung check before anaesthesia. |
| Biopsy (only in selected cases) | Small or uncertain masses, or before drug treatment of metastatic disease. |
🏥 The Procedure — Step by Step

⚖️ Types & Techniques
| Technique | What is done | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy | Keyhole removal of the kidney | Most T2 tumours without vein involvement |
| Robotic radical nephrectomy | Robot-assisted keyhole surgery | Large tumours, node dissection, complex anatomy |
| Open radical nephrectomy | One larger cut under the ribs or in the midline | Very large tumours, tumour thrombus in the vein or IVC |
| Radical nephrectomy with IVC thrombectomy | Tumour removed from the vena cava, sometimes with cardiac support | Level I–IV tumour thrombus |
| Partial nephrectomy (see separate package) | Only the tumour removed | T1a and many T1b tumours |
| Cytoreductive nephrectomy | Primary tumour removed in metastatic disease | Selected patients, with systemic therapy |

🏆 Success Rate
| Outcome | Result |
|---|---|
| 5-year relative survival, kidney cancer confined to the kidney (ACS/SEER) | More than 90% |

- •Wound or chest infection – occasional
- •Conversion from keyhole to open surgery – uncommon
- •Injury to nearby organs (bowel, spleen, liver, pancreas) or large blood vessels – rare
- •Air leak around the lung (pneumothorax) during upper-pole surgery – rare
