He has completed his M.B.B.S. and M.S. (General Surgery) from the Seth KM School of Post Graduate Medicine, and M.Ch. (Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery) from Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute, Trivandrum.

After his training, Dr. Attawar worked at the Manipal Heart Foundation and Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bangalore. Since 2001 he has been involved in setting up greenfield heart surgical services, and since 2011 he has expanded these to thoracic organ transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.
He has led the realignment of cardiac and respiratory services into heart and lung transplant centres at the Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Mumbai branches of Gleneagles Global Hospitals, before becoming Founding Director of the Solid Thoracic Organ Transplant Programme at KIMS Hospitals.
His team has performed more than 555 thoracic organ transplants, including 381 double lung transplants, 117 heart transplants and 57 combined heart and lung transplants, along with 50 long-term left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implants. These procedures offer a lifeline to patients with end-stage lung disease and advanced heart failure.
Dr. Attawar was chosen as one of a 24-member international expert panel that wrote the lung transplant guidelines of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT). He is a Scientific Adviser to Reliant Heart and Proctor for Jarvik Heart and HeartMate 3 in India and South East Asia.
He has contributed to the textbook 'Transplantations and Mechanical Circulatory Support for End-stage Lung and Heart Disease' (Wiley), has published in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery and is an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Thoracic Disease. He is a member of ISHLT, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the European Association of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.
