- Dr. Mehra had an outstanding academic record, winning the Dr. M. D. Desai Best Outgoing Student Gold Medal (1977), the Dr. Motibhai Patel Gold Medal for Surgery from Gujarat University, the Mrs. Saraswati Jagmohan Parikh Gold Medal for Surgery (1982) and the Dr. Ashok Shah Gold Medal for Surgery. He then spent more than six years at St. Thomas' Hospital, London, before returning to India and joining Jaslok Hospital in 1995.
- He has performed more than 5,000 coronary artery bypass operations. He is known for total arterial grafting using LIMA, RIMA and Y grafts, redo cardiac surgery, surgery for acute aortic dissection, and mitral and other heart valve replacement. Arterial grafts tend to stay open longer than vein grafts, which can improve long-term results after bypass surgery.
- Dr. Mehra pioneered Octopus MICAS off-pump surgery in India and performed Mumbai's first beating heart surgery using the Octopus stabiliser at Jaslok in May 1998. He is described as the first surgeon in Asia to perform Impella device-supported cardiac surgery and managed Jaslok's first successful ECMO bridge-to-recovery in a code blue survivor.
- An entrepreneur as well as a surgeon, he founded a 108-bed NABH-accredited super speciality hospital in Surat. He has published more than 30 research papers in international journals and is a member of the Indian Association of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgeons and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.
- His honours include the Times of India Lifetime Achievement Award (2018), the Gaurav Shri Samman 2023 presented by the Governor of Maharashtra, the Dr. G. V. Deshmukh Oration of the Indian Medical Association (2006), the Dr. F. P. Antia Oration (2004) and the IMA Special Award to Eminent Medical Men (2005).
