- Dr. Anand Somaya joined the Army after his medical studies and spent two years in Ladakh treating casualties of the 1971 Indo-Pak War, operating in an underground theatre at 17,000 feet that was considered the highest in the world. After serving for eight years in the Army as a General Surgeon and attaining the rank of Major, he left the armed forces.
- In 1978 he joined the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Bombay Hospital under Dr. Nemish A. Shah, a pioneer of cardiac surgery in India. He then trained in Houston, Texas, with Dr. Denton Cooley, one of the best-known cardiovascular surgeons in the world, and in London before rejoining Bombay Hospital as Associate Consultant in the early 1980s, later becoming Senior Consultant. In the late 1980s he completed a fellowship in organ transplantation at Pittsburgh under Dr. Starzl, then director of the largest transplant facility in the world.
- His areas of expertise are venous disease and arterial surgery. Vascular surgery treats conditions such as varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency, peripheral arterial blockages and aneurysms, using open reconstruction and bypass as well as newer minimally invasive approaches to restore circulation and prevent complications.
- Dr. Somaya is a Founder Member of the Vascular Society of India (1995) and served as its President from 1997 to 1999. He has co-authored papers on coronary bypass surgery, open mitral commissurotomy, sub-aortic stenosis and saphenous vein bypass for renovascular hypertension presented at Asian and national cardiothoracic congresses.
- He is a member of the Association of Surgeons of India, a life member of the Association of Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgeons of India, the Cardiological Society of India and the American College of Chest Physicians (Bombay Chapter), and a member of the International College of Angiology, the Society for Vascular Surgery, USA, and the American Venous Forum.
