About the Procedure
- It is performed by an interventional radiologist in a DSA lab under local anaesthesia.
- A small needle or catheter is placed in a vein of the hand, foot, groin or neck, depending on the area to be studied.
- Contrast is injected and rapid digital images are recorded and processed.
- If a blockage is found, treatment such as venoplasty, stenting or clot removal can often be done in the same sitting (charged separately).
Purpose of the Procedure
- Diagnose deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and chronic venous blockages
- Evaluate central vein stenosis in dialysis patients (arm swelling, failing AV fistula)
- Plan treatment of varicose veins, May-Thurner syndrome and pelvic congestion
- Study vascular malformations and venous anatomy before surgery
- Assess IVC, renal vein or portal / hepatic vein problems
Diagnosis and Tests Before the Procedure
- Venous Doppler ultrasound
- CT or MR venography where available
- Kidney function test (creatinine) before contrast
- Clotting profile and blood tests
Step-by-Step Procedure
- Brief consultation and consent; no general anaesthesia needed
- Local anaesthesia and placement of a cannula or catheter into the vein
- Contrast injected while digital subtraction images are taken
- Additional views or pressure measurements as required
- Catheter removed and pressure applied; observation for 2-4 hours
Risks and Possible Complications
- Mild pain or bruising at the injection site
- Allergic reaction to contrast (rare)
- Contrast-related kidney strain in patients with kidney disease
- Very rare: vein inflammation or clot
Your specialist will explain the risks specific to your condition. Choosing an experienced, high-volume hospital keeps complication rates very low.
Recovery and Aftercare
- Most patients go home the same day
- Normal activities the next day
- Drink plenty of fluids to flush out the contrast
- Results are discussed with the vascular surgeon or interventional radiologist
