📖 What is Carotid Artery Disease and Endarterectomy?
The carotid arteries are two large blood vessels, one on each side of the neck, that carry blood to the brain, face and neck. Over time, fat, cholesterol and calcium can build up inside them as plaque (atherosclerosis). This narrows the artery (carotid stenosis). Small pieces of plaque or clot can break off and travel to the brain, causing a mini-stroke (TIA) or a full stroke. Carotid disease causes about 10–15% of all strokes.
Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is an operation to remove this plaque. Through a cut on the side of the neck, the surgeon opens the artery, peels out the plaque and closes the artery, usually with a patch to keep it wide. It is one of the best-studied operations in medicine and clearly reduces the risk of future stroke in the right patients.

💡 Surgery is not needed for mild narrowing. Narrowing under 50% (with symptoms) or under 60–70% (without symptoms) is treated with medicines – aspirin or clopidogrel, a statin, blood pressure and sugar control, and stopping smoking. Carotid stenting (CAS or TCAR) is an alternative for patients at high surgical risk. Sudden stroke symptoms are an emergency – call local emergency services immediately.
