🧠 DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING PACKAGE — INDIA

MRI Scan in India (With and Without Contrast)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a strong magnet and radio waves — not X-rays — to make detailed pictures of the brain, spine, joints, heart and abdomen. A plain (non-contrast) MRI needs no injection; a contrast MRI adds a gadolinium dye through a vein to show tumours, infection or inflammation more clearly. Satyug books MRI scans at accredited hospitals in Delhi NCR, with a radiologist report usually within 24–48 hours, so you can take it to your specialist or use it for a free second opinion.

🧠 What is an MRI Scan?

An MRI scanner is a large tube surrounded by a powerful magnet. While you lie still on a table that slides into the tube, the machine sends radio-wave pulses and records signals from the water in your tissues. A computer turns these signals into thin slices in any direction. MRI is excellent for soft tissues — brain, spinal cord, nerves, discs, ligaments, cartilage, muscles, liver, pancreas, prostate and the female pelvis.

Because MRI uses no ionising radiation, it can be repeated when needed and is preferred for children and young adults where possible. Most hospitals in India have 1.5 Tesla and 3 Tesla scanners; 3T gives sharper detail for the brain, prostate and small joints, while 1.5T is excellent for most routine studies and suits some implants better.

For whole-body cancer staging, a PET-CT Scan is often used together with MRI. If your MRI shows a brain tumour, see our Brain Tumor Biopsy and Brain Tumour Surgery packages.

🖼️ Understand It in Pictures

💡 In simple words
An MRI is like a very detailed camera made from a magnet. You lie still in a tunnel for about half an hour while it makes loud knocking sounds. It does not hurt and uses no X-rays. Sometimes a dye (contrast) is injected in the arm so that a tumour, infection or swelling “lights up” and is easier for the doctor to see.

🔍 What MRI is Commonly Used For

🧠
Brain
Headache with warning signs, seizures, stroke, tumours, multiple sclerosis, dementia work-up.
🦴
Spine
Slipped disc, nerve compression, spinal cord problems, back pain with leg symptoms.
🦶
Joints
Knee ligament and meniscus tears, shoulder rotator cuff, hip and ankle problems.
🫀
Abdomen & pelvis
Liver lesions, MRCP for bile ducts, pancreas, uterus, ovaries, prostate (multiparametric MRI).
🎗
Cancer
Finding, staging and following tumours, often with contrast.
❤️
Heart & vessels
Cardiac MRI and MR angiography for arteries and veins.

⚠️ MRI Safety: Tell Us Before You Book

  • ➤Pacemaker or implanted defibrillator (some are MRI-conditional, many are not)
  • ➤Cochlear implant, nerve stimulator or drug pump
  • ➤Metal fragments in the eye or body (welders, injuries)
  • ➤Brain aneurysm clips or heart valve type
  • ➤Pregnancy (contrast is avoided)
  • ➤Kidney disease or dialysis (affects contrast choice)
  • ➤Previous reaction to MRI contrast
  • ➤Fear of closed spaces (claustrophobia) or difficulty lying still
💡 Contrast or not? Many scans (most knee, shoulder and spine studies, and many brain scans) are done without contrast. Contrast is added when the doctor needs to look for tumours, infection, inflammation, multiple sclerosis activity or after surgery. The radiologist decides with your referring doctor. If your doctor wrote “MRI with contrast”, bring the referral so the right protocol is booked.

🔬 Before Your MRI

Test / checkWhy it matters
Doctor’s referral / clinical questionDecides the body part, sequences and whether contrast is needed.
Previous scans (CD) and reportsThe radiologist compares old and new images.
Serum creatinine / eGFR (contrast scans)Checks kidney function before gadolinium.
Implant card or detailsConfirms whether a device is MRI-safe or MRI-conditional.
Fasting (some abdominal scans)For MRCP or abdomen, usually 4–6 hours without food.
Sedation plan (children / claustrophobia)Some children and anxious adults need mild sedation or anaesthesia.

🏥 How an MRI Scan is Done — Step by Step

MRI scan day steps
1
Booking
Satyug books a slot at an accredited hospital, often the same or next day.
2
Registration
Passport and referral are checked; you fill in the MRI safety form.
3
Preparation
Change into a gown and remove all metal objects, cards and phones.
4
Cannula (if contrast)
A small plastic tube is placed in an arm vein.
5
Positioning
You lie on the table; a coil is placed around the part to be scanned.
6
Scanning
The table moves into the scanner. Each sequence takes a few minutes; you must stay still.
7
Contrast phase
If needed, gadolinium is injected and more images are taken.
8
Finish
The cannula is removed; you can eat, drink and travel normally.
9
Reporting
A radiologist studies the images and writes the report, usually within 24–48 hours.
10
Specialist review
Satyug shares the report with the specialist of your choice for an opinion.

⚖️ MRI Without Contrast vs With Contrast

FeatureMRI without contrastMRI with contrast
InjectionNoneGadolinium dye through an arm vein
Typical usesJoints, spine discs, many brain scans, first lookTumours, infection, inflammation, MS activity, after surgery
TimeAbout 15–45 minutesAbout 30–60 minutes
Extra testsUsually noneKidney test (creatinine) in many patients
CostLowerHigher (contrast agent and longer scan)
📚 Evidence note: Gadolinium contrast is very safe for most people. In a study of more than 30,000 gadobutrol-enhanced MRI exams, allergic-like reactions occurred in 0.32%, almost all mild (78 mild, 3 moderate, 1 severe) (reported by Radiology Business, 2016). Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis is a rare risk linked to some older agents in severe kidney failure, which is why kidney function is checked (ACR Manual on Contrast Media).

🏆 What the Report Tells You

MeasureWhat to expect
Report timeUsually 24–48 hours; urgent reports sooner
What you receiveWritten radiologist report plus images on CD or online link
AccuracyExcellent soft-tissue detail; best interpreted with your symptoms and other tests
Next stepFree review by a specialist through Satyug if you wish
💡 An MRI is a test, not a diagnosis on its own. Small findings are common and may not explain your symptoms, so a specialist should read the report together with your examination.

🩹 Risks & Possible Complications

  • •No radiation risk
  • •Strong magnet: dangerous with some implants and metal fragments, which is why the safety form matters
  • •Loud noise: ear plugs or headphones are provided
  • •Claustrophobia: mild sedation or a wider-bore scanner may help
  • •Contrast reactions (itching, rash, nausea) - uncommon and usually mild; severe reactions are rare
  • •Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis - very rare, linked to severe kidney failure and some older agents
  • •Small amounts of gadolinium can stay in the body; no harm has been proven, and contrast is used only when it adds value

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

➤ How much does an MRI scan cost in India?
An estimated USD 55–140 per body region at diagnostic centres, with a tier-1 city average of about INR 7,500 (about USD 90). Contrast and whole-body MRI cost more. The exact price is confirmed before booking.
➤ What is the difference between MRI with and without contrast?
A plain MRI uses no injection. A contrast MRI adds a gadolinium dye through a vein, which helps show tumours, infection, inflammation and scar tissue. Your doctor and the radiologist decide which one is needed.
➤ Is MRI without contrast enough?
For many joint, spine and brain questions, yes. Contrast is added when the doctor needs to look for tumours, infection, multiple sclerosis activity or changes after surgery.
➤ How long does an MRI take?
Usually 15–45 minutes for a plain scan and 30–60 minutes with contrast.
➤ When will I get the report?
Usually within 24–48 hours, with images on CD or an online link.
➤ Is MRI contrast safe?
Yes for most people. Allergic-like reactions are uncommon and usually mild. Kidney function is checked first, and contrast is avoided in pregnancy unless essential.
➤ Can I have an MRI with a pacemaker or implant?
Some devices are MRI-conditional and can be scanned under special settings; others cannot. Send your implant card before booking.
➤ Do I need to fast?
Most MRI scans need no fasting. Some abdominal scans such as MRCP need 4–6 hours without food.
➤ What if I am afraid of closed spaces?
Tell us early. Ear plugs, music, a mirror, mild sedation or a wider-bore scanner can help.
➤ Is 3T MRI better than 1.5T?
3T gives sharper images for some uses (brain, prostate, small joints). 1.5T is excellent for most routine scans and may be safer for some implants.
➤ Can I get a specialist opinion on my MRI?
Yes. Satyug can share your report and images with a specialist for a free opinion and treatment cost estimate.
➤ Do I need a visa for only an MRI?
Yes, foreign nationals need a valid Indian visa. We help with the hospital letter for an e-Medical visa if you are travelling for diagnosis and treatment.
➤ Do you provide an interpreter?
Yes. Free interpreters for Arabic, French and Russian (plus English); our coordinators speak English, Arabic, French and Portuguese.
