📖 What is a Cochlear Implant?
The cochlea is a small, snail-shaped organ in the inner ear. It has thousands of tiny hair cells that turn sound into nerve signals for the brain. When these hair cells are badly damaged – from birth, infection such as meningitis, certain medicines, ageing or loud noise – the person has severe or profound deafness. Normal hearing aids only make sound louder, so they do not help when the hair cells cannot pick up sound.
A cochlear implant is an electronic device that bypasses the damaged hair cells and directly stimulates the hearing nerve. It has two parts: an internal implant placed under the skin behind the ear with a thin electrode inside the cochlea, and an external sound processor worn on the ear. The processor is switched on about 2–4 weeks after surgery, then tuned (mapping) over several sessions. With speech therapy, most children learn to hear and speak, and most adults understand speech much better.
