He played a key role in establishing the DM Medical Oncology course of Mumbai University at Tata Memorial Hospital and is a recognised MSc and PhD guide in Applied Biology.
- His clinical expertise includes bone marrow and stem cell transplantation, lymphomas, acute leukaemias, multiple myeloma and breast cancer, along with cancer awareness, education and clinical trials. His department offers bone marrow transplantation, a haematology laboratory, flow cytometry, cytogenetic and molecular laboratories, day-care chemotherapy and patient counselling groups.
- He has served as Chief Investigator of the Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia Project supported by the National Cancer Institute, Washington, and the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia Project supported by the Department of Science and Technology. His research interests include developmental therapeutics and biological therapies directed at molecular targets on cancer cells, and he has more than 500 national and international publications.
- Dr. Advani was honoured with the Padma Shri (2002) and Padma Bhushan (2012) by the Government of India and the Dr. B. C. Roy National Award (2005). His other honours include Lifetime Achievement in Oncology from Harvard Medical International (2005), the Gifted Teacher Award (2004), the INCTR Lifetime Achievement Award, the Nazli Gad-el-Mawla Award, the ICMR Sandoz Oration (1994) and numerous oration awards from Indian medical societies.
