  • He is a pioneer of paediatric intensive care in India. In 1982 he started the country's first PICU at Kalawati Saran Children's Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, and later set up the first private-sector PICU in the country at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. Many paediatricians trained by him now run PICUs across India.
  • Dr. Chugh has extensive experience in paediatric and neonatal bronchoscopy and is a pioneer of interventional bronchoscopy in children in India. Bronchoscopy allows doctors to examine and treat the airways directly, for example to remove inhaled foreign bodies, clear blockages or investigate persistent pneumonia and noisy breathing. He conducts an annual paediatric bronchoscopy workshop at FMRI.
  • He has served as Chancellor of the College of Paediatric Critical Care and Dean of the Indian College of Paediatrics, and sits on the editorial boards of several journals including Indian Paediatrics, Indian Journal of Paediatrics, Indian Journal of Critical Care Medicine and Journal of Paediatric Critical Care. He writes extensively for scientific journals and is frequently consulted by the media on child health topics such as pollution, dengue and swine flu.
