- He was awarded the International College of Surgeons Travelling Fellowship, through which he trained in Video-assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) at Cedars Sinai Medical Centre, Los Angeles, USA. He subsequently trained in advanced thoracic surgery at the Department of Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery, Medanta the Medicity, Gurgaon, before returning to perform open thoracic surgery and VATS at hospitals across Mumbai and Thane.
- Dr. Bhanushali's particular expertise is uniportal (single port) VATS, in which major chest operations are performed through a single small incision. He uses this approach for lung resections such as lobectomy, pneumonectomy and segmentectomy, and for complications of tuberculosis including cavities, haemoptysis, fungal balls, bronchiectasis and destroyed lung. He also performs uniportal VATS for lung and oesophageal cancer, empyema decortication, recurrent pneumothorax, undiagnosed pleural effusion, sweaty palms (hyperhidrosis) and thoracic duct leaks.
- In addition to minimally invasive work, he performs complex open thoracic surgery as well as fibre-optic and rigid bronchoscopy. He obtained the Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery (FMAS) in 2014 and the Fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery (FALS) with VATS as subspeciality in 2015.
- Dr. Bhanushali is an invited speaker at many national and international conferences and workshops. He regularly conducts CME programmes and training courses in VATS for junior surgeons and is faculty at the Asia Thoracoscopic Surgery Education Program.
