- Dr. Balasubramoniam began his career as a Junior Cardiac Surgeon at Southern Railway Hospital, Chennai in 2011 and then served as Assistant Professor in the Minimally Invasive Thoracic and Aortic Division at SCTIMST from 2011 to 2014. From 2014 to 2019 he was Associate Professor of CVTS and Heart Lung Transplantation at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi, where he headed the Minimally Invasive and Robotic Thoracic Unit and the VV ECMO programme. He joined Yashoda Hospitals in 2019 and is Director of the Minimally Invasive Thoracic Programme across its Hyderabad units, having established minimally invasive thoracic units at SCTIMST, Amrita and Yashoda.
- He has performed more than 1,500 VATS procedures and 200 robotic thoracic procedures on the da Vinci Si and Xi systems, and he performed the first robotic thoracic procedure in Kerala in 2016. At Yashoda Hospitals about 70 percent of his thoracic operations are done by minimally invasive techniques. His expertise includes lung cancer surgery, robotic thymectomy and lobectomy for mediastinal and lung tumours, parenchyma-sparing operations such as sleeve lobectomy, chest wall tumour resection and reconstruction, tracheal surgery, rib fracture fixation, flap reconstruction for sternal osteomyelitis and VATS sympathectomy for excessive sweating of the palms and soles.
- He leads the lung transplant programme at Yashoda Hospitals, where more than 35 lung transplants have been reported, and he was lead thoracic surgeon on the team that performed India's first tracheal allotransplant using a prefabricated flap. Lung transplantation offers a new set of lungs to patients with end-stage lung failure from conditions such as interstitial lung disease and COPD when other treatments are no longer effective.
- His advanced international training includes VATS at National University Hospital, Singapore (2013) and Cedars-Sinai, Los Angeles (2014), advanced aortic surgery at Cleveland Clinic (2014), lung transplantation at the University of Vienna (2015), robotic thoracic surgery at the University of Alabama (2016) and the University of Rouen (2017), and uniportal VATS at Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital (2018). He started the first IACTS-accredited VATS fellowship in India, has served as faculty and course coordinator for national and international VATS and robotic workshops, and has published around ten journal articles and case reports on subjects including tracheal allotransplantation and pulmonary capillary haemangiomatosis.
