📖 What is Squint (Strabismus) Surgery?

A squint, or strabismus, is a condition in which the two eyes do not look in the same direction. One eye may turn in (esotropia), out (exotropia), up (hypertropia) or down. Each eye is moved by six small muscles; when they are not balanced, the eyes are misaligned. In children, the brain may ignore the turned eye, leading to lazy eye (amblyopia) and poor 3D vision. In adults, squint often causes double vision, eye strain and loss of confidence.

Squint surgery adjusts the eye muscles to bring the eyes into line. The surgeon makes a tiny opening in the clear skin over the white of the eye (conjunctiva) – there is no cut on the face and the eye is not removed. A muscle may be loosened (recession) by moving it back, or tightened (resection/plication) by shortening it. Dissolving stitches are used. In adults, adjustable sutures allow fine-tuning after the patient wakes up. Children have general anaesthesia; most patients go home the same day.

🖼️ Understand It in Pictures

💡 In simple words
A squint (strabismus) is when the eyes point in different directions: in, out, up or down. Surgery adjusts the eye muscles on the outside of the eye so the eyes line up better. It does not replace glasses or lazy-eye treatment, but helps alignment and appearance.

🩺 Conditions Treated

↘️
Esotropia (inward turn)
Infantile, accommodative-plus or adult eye turning in.
↗️
Exotropia (outward turn)
Intermittent or constant outward drift, common in children and adults.
↕️
Vertical squint
One eye higher or lower, including superior oblique palsy.
⚡
Paralytic squint
Squint from 3rd, 4th or 6th nerve palsy after injury, stroke or diabetes.
🦋
Thyroid eye disease squint
Restricted, stiff muscles causing double vision.
🔁
Residual or recurrent squint
Re-operation after previous squint surgery.

⚠️ Signs That May Need Squint Surgery

  • ➤Eyes pointing in different directions
  • ➤Double vision (adults)
  • ➤Closing one eye in bright light
  • ➤Head tilt or turn to see clearly
  • ➤Poor depth perception
  • ➤Eye strain and headaches
  • ➤Lazy eye (amblyopia) in a child
  • ➤Squint not corrected by glasses
💡 Some squints are treated without surgery. Accommodative squint in children often straightens fully with the right glasses. Lazy eye is first treated with glasses and patching. Small squints with double vision may be helped by prism glasses or Botox injection into the eye muscle.

🔬 Tests Before Treatment

TestWhy it is done
Visual acuity & refraction (with dilating drops)Checks vision and need for glasses
Prism cover testMeasures the angle of squint in prism dioptres
Ocular motility & Hess chartChecks how each eye muscle is working
Binocular vision & stereopsis testsMeasures 3D vision and double vision
Fundus examinationChecks the back of the eye
MRI / thyroid tests (if needed)For paralytic or thyroid-related squint
Blood tests & paediatric fitnessFitness for anaesthesia

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

➤ What is the cost of squint surgery in India?
Squint surgery in India starts from about USD 800 for one eye, USD 1,200 for both eyes and about USD 1,500 for complex squint surgery.
➤ How long do I need to stay in India?
About 5–7 days: assessment, surgery as day care (or 1 night) and a check-up before flying home.
➤ Is squint surgery painful?
It is done under anaesthesia so there is no pain during surgery. Afterwards the eye feels sore and gritty for a few days, eased by drops and painkillers.
➤ Is the eye taken out during surgery?
No. This is a common worry. The eye stays in place; the surgeon works on the muscles through a tiny opening in the clear skin over the white of the eye.
➤ What is the best age for squint surgery in children?
It depends on the type. Infantile esotropia is often operated between 6 and 24 months; other squints at any age. Early treatment gives the best chance of 3D vision.
➤ Can adults have squint surgery?
Yes. Squint surgery works well at any age and can relieve double vision and improve appearance and confidence.
➤ Will my child still need glasses?
Often yes. Surgery straightens the eyes, but glasses may still be needed for clear vision, and patching for lazy eye may continue.
➤ How successful is the surgery?
About 80–90% of patients have good alignment after one operation. About 10–20% may need a further operation in future.
➤ When can I return to work or school?
Children usually return to school in 3–7 days, and adults to work in about a week.
➤ Will there be a visible scar?
No skin scar. The eye will look red for 2–4 weeks, then the white of the eye returns to normal.
➤ What are adjustable sutures?
A special stitch that lets the surgeon fine-tune the eye position a few hours after surgery while the patient is awake. It is used mainly in adults and complex cases.
➤ How many attendants can come?
For children, both parents can come as attendants. We issue the visa invitation letter.
➤ What follow-up is needed at home?
Checks at 1–2 weeks, 6 weeks and 3–6 months with a local eye doctor, plus video follow-ups with your surgeon.
➤ Is an interpreter available?
Yes. Satyug provides interpreters for Arabic, French and Portuguese (plus English).
