He trained and worked in the United States for many years, completing a transitional year in medicine at Frankford Hospitals, Jefferson University School of Medicine, followed by internal medicine and subspecialty fellowships at leading American institutions. He then served as Associate Professor in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Ohio University and practised in Ohio before returning to India.
- He joined Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in 2014 with the aim of building a leading gastroenterology and hepatology unit grounded in evidence-based care. Since joining, he has been involved in more than 200 liver transplants and performs more than 2,000 procedures and sees around 4,000 outpatients a year.
- His areas of interest include end-stage liver disease and cirrhosis, liver transplantation, fatty liver disease and NASH, gastrointestinal bleeding and luminal therapeutic endoscopy. He performs diagnostic and therapeutic upper GI endoscopy with variceal banding and sclerotherapy, ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound with diagnostic and therapeutic FNA, Fibroscan, PEG insertion, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, pancreatic pseudocyst drainage and placement of biliary, oesophageal and duodenal metal stents.
- During his training he received the Chairman's Award for the most outstanding first-year resident (2004) and the Program Director's Award for the most outstanding senior resident (2006) at Graduate Hospital, and was nominated for the 2006 Resident Scholar Award of the American Liver Foundation and AASLD. He has presented abstracts at ACG, Digestive Disease Week and the Society of Hospital Medicine meetings, authored a book chapter on the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma and a review on health maintenance in cirrhosis in Medical Clinics of North America (2009).
- Dr. Mehta is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Gastroenterology, and a member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.
