What is a Liver Transplant
A liver transplant is a life-saving surgical procedure in which a diseased or failing liver is replaced with a healthy liver from a living or deceased donor. India has become a global leader in liver transplantation, offering world-class outcomes at 60–70% less than the cost in the USA or UK — with no years-long waitlist.
India's top transplant centres perform over 2,000 liver transplants annually, with survival rates matching the best programmes in the world.
Types of Liver Transplant
| Type | Description | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Living Donor (LDLT) | A healthy close relative donates a portion of their liver. Both livers regenerate fully within weeks. | Most common in India. Ideal when a matching relative is available. |
| Cadaveric (Deceased) | Whole liver from a brain-dead donor transplanted into the recipient. | Acute liver failure when no living donor is available. |
| Split Liver | Deceased donor liver split and transplanted into two recipients. | One adult + one paediatric recipient. |
| Paediatric | Specialised transplant for infants and children with biliary atresia, metabolic liver disease or acute failure. | Children and infants only. |
| Auxiliary | Only a portion of the diseased liver is removed; a partial donor liver placed alongside to support regeneration. | When native liver may recover over time. |
When Do You Need a Liver Transplant
A liver transplant is recommended when the liver is damaged beyond repair due to chronic or acute liver failure. Common conditions include:
● Alcoholic liver disease (cirrhosis)
● Non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD/NASH)
● Biliary atresia (in children)
● Sclerosing cholangitis
● Wilson's disease & Hemochromatosis
● Hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer)
● Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency
● Metabolic liver diseases
● Fatty liver with severe fibrosis

Donor Eligibility & Criteria for Liver Transplant in India
Most liver transplants for international patients in India are Living Donor Liver Transplants (LDLT) — a healthy person donates a portion of their liver, which regenerates to near-full size in both donor and recipient within a few months. This is different from heart, lung, or cornea transplant, which require a deceased donor.
- Who can donate (India's law): Under India's Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), living liver donation from a foreign national's "near relative" — spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, or grandchild — is permitted with standard documentation. A non-near-relative donor requires additional clearance from the treating hospital's Authorization Committee, confirming the donation is voluntary and not commercial.
- Proof of relationship: Foreign patients need notarized and embassy-attested documents proving the donor's relationship to the recipient. We advise exactly which documents your case needs and how to get them attested before you travel.
- Donor medical eligibility: Generally age 18–55, good general health, compatible blood type, sufficient liver volume and favourable anatomy (confirmed by CT volumetry), and no transmissible infections (screened for HIV, Hepatitis B & C) or liver disease.
- Donor evaluation: Blood typing, detailed liver imaging (CT/MRI volumetry to calculate the exact graft size needed), liver function tests, and a psychological evaluation confirming informed, voluntary consent.
- Donor recovery: The donor's liver typically regenerates to near-full volume within 6–8 weeks; most donors are hospitalised for 7–10 days and can resume normal activity within 2–3 months.
- Authorization Committee review: For foreign national donors, the hospital's Authorization Committee typically interviews the donor and recipient together to verify the relationship and consent — a legal safeguard in India, not a Satyug-specific step. We help you prepare for it.
- No suitable living donor? India also has a deceased-donor liver programme through NOTTO/SOTTO, though living donation from a related donor is usually faster to arrange for international patients. We'll advise which route fits your situation during your free medical opinion.
Documentation & Paperwork Checklist
- Passport valid for at least 6 months (both patient and donor)
- Indian Medical Visa for the patient (regular medical visa, supported by the hospital's invitation letter) and a Medical Attendant Visa for the donor/accompanying family member
- Notarized and embassy-attested proof of the donor-recipient relationship
- No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the hospital's Authorization Committee, confirming the donation is legally cleared
- Complete medical records: liver function history, imaging, and your referring physician's summary
- Passport-size photographs of both patient and donor
- Financial undertaking / proof of funds
- Insurance documentation, if applicable
