📖 What is Root Canal Treatment?

Every tooth has a soft core called the pulp, which holds nerves and blood vessels. The pulp runs through thin channels inside the roots called root canals. When deep decay, a crack or an injury lets germs reach the pulp, it becomes inflamed or infected. This causes strong toothache, and if not treated, a pus pocket (abscess) can form at the root tip and damage the jaw bone.

Root canal treatment (RCT), also called endodontic treatment, removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the canals, disinfects them and seals them with a rubber-like filling (gutta-percha). The tooth is then closed with a filling and, for back teeth, usually covered with a crown. RCT saves your own tooth, so you do not need an extraction, an implant or a bridge.

🖼️ Understand It in Pictures

💡 In simple words
Inside each tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, with nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay or a crack can let germs in and infect the pulp, causing pain or an abscess. Root canal treatment cleans out the infection and seals the tooth so it can be kept.

🩺 Conditions Treated

🦠
Deep tooth decay
Cavities that have reached the pulp and cause pain or infection.
🔥
Irreversible pulpitis
Pulp inflammation that will not heal by itself – often severe, night-time or lingering pain.
💥
Dental abscess
A pus pocket at the root tip causing swelling, gum boil or bad taste.
⚡
Cracked or broken tooth
Fractures that expose the pulp after an injury or biting hard food.
🔁
Failed old root canal
A tooth treated before that is infected again and needs re-treatment.
👑
Before crowns or bridges
Teeth that need RCT for support before a crown, bridge or heavy reshaping.

⚠️ Symptoms That May Need a Root Canal

  • ➤Severe or throbbing toothache
  • ➤Pain that wakes you at night
  • ➤Sensitivity to hot or cold that lasts
  • ➤Pain when biting or chewing
  • ➤Swelling of the gum or face
  • ➤A pimple or boil on the gum
  • ➤Darkening of one tooth
  • ➤Loose tooth with bad taste or smell
💡 Not every toothache needs a root canal. Small cavities and mild sensitivity are treated with a simple filling, and early pulp irritation in young teeth may be managed with pulp capping. If a tooth is badly broken below the gum or has very little support left, extraction and an implant may be the better choice.

🔬 Tests Before Treatment

TestWhy it is done
Clinical examinationThe dentist checks the tooth, gums and bite, and taps the tooth to find the painful one.
Digital X-ray (IOPA / RVG)Shows decay depth, root shape and any infection at the root tip, with very low radiation.
Pulp vitality test (cold or electric)Checks if the nerve is still alive, inflamed or dead.
CBCT 3D scan (if needed)Shows extra or curved canals, cracks or failed old treatment in 3D.
Blood sugar and blood pressure checkRecommended for diabetic or older patients before treatment and anaesthesia.

🏥 The Procedure — Step by Step

Root Canal Treatment procedure steps
1
Consultation and X-ray
The endodontist examines the tooth, takes a digital X-ray and explains the plan and cost.
2
Local anaesthesia
The tooth and gum are numbed so the treatment is painless.
3
Isolation
A thin rubber sheet (rubber dam) keeps the tooth dry and free from saliva germs.
4
Opening the tooth
A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to reach the pulp.
5
Cleaning the canals
Infected pulp is removed with fine rotary files; an apex locator measures exact canal length.
6
Disinfection
Canals are washed with antiseptic solutions; medicine may be placed between visits if infection is heavy.
7
Filling the canals
Canals are sealed with gutta-percha and sealer to stop germs coming back.
8
Restoring the tooth
A filling closes the tooth; a crown is advised for back teeth (charged separately).
9
Review
A check-up and X-ray confirm the tooth is comfortable and well sealed before you fly home.

⚖️ Types & Techniques

TechniqueWhat is doneBest for
Single-sitting RCTCleaning, shaping and filling done in one visit of 60–90 minutesTeeth without major infection; patients with short stays
Multi-sitting RCTMedicine placed in the canals between 2–3 visits a few days apartTeeth with abscess, swelling or heavy infection
Rotary RCT with apex locatorMachine-driven nickel-titanium files and electronic length measurementMost teeth; faster, more precise cleaning
Re-root canal (re-treatment)Old filling material removed, canals cleaned and sealed againTeeth with failed previous root canals
Microscope-assisted RCTTreatment under a dental microscope to find hidden or calcified canalsMolars with extra or narrow canals, complex cases
📊 Systematic reviews (Ng et al., International Endodontic Journal 2010–2011) found that about 86–93% of root-canal-treated teeth survive 2–10 years, and that a good crown and well-sealed filling improve survival.

📅 Your Day-by-Day Plan in India

DayWhat happens
Day 1Arrival in India ✈️, airport pick-up and hotel check-in
Day 2Consultation, digital X-ray, first RCT sitting (single-sitting RCT may be completed today)
Day 3–4Rest; second sitting if multi-sitting RCT is needed (same-day discharge)

Day 6–7Crown fitting (if chosen) and final review X-ray – Fly home ✈️

🌱 Recovery After Treatment

😌
Day 1
Mild soreness or tenderness when biting is normal for 1–3 days; simple painkillers help.
🍲
Days 1–3
Eat soft food and chew on the other side until the final filling or crown is placed.
🦷
Week 1
Most patients are fully comfortable; the temporary filling must not be lost.
👑
Weeks 1–4
Get the crown fitted on back teeth soon to protect the tooth from cracking.
🪥
Ongoing
Brush twice a day, floss and limit sugar – the treated tooth can still get new decay.
🔍
6–12 months
Review X-ray with your local dentist to confirm the root tip is healing.

🏆 Success Rate

OutcomeResult
Tooth survival at 2–10 yearsAbout 86–93%
Healing of infection at root tipAbout 80–90%
Pain relief after treatmentAbout 95% of patients
Success of re-treatmentAbout 75–85%
Average treatment time1–2 visits of 45–90 minutes

Results are best when the tooth has enough healthy structure left, the canals are fully cleaned and sealed, and a crown is placed on back teeth soon after treatment. Cracks, gum disease and delayed crowns lower long-term success.

🩹 Risks & Possible Complications

Root canal treatment is very safe; problems are usually minor and treatable.

  • •Short-term soreness or swelling for 1–3 days – common, eased by painkillers
  • •Flare-up of pain or swelling between visits – about 5–10%, sometimes needs antibiotics
  • •Tooth fracture if a crown is not placed on a back tooth
  • •Infection coming back over time – about 5–15%, may need re-treatment
  • •Broken file tip or missed extra canal – uncommon, usually manageable
  • •Rarely, the tooth cannot be saved and needs extraction

💰 Cost of Root Canal Treatment in India

The cost of root canal treatment in India starts from about USD 79 per tooth. This covers consultation, local anaesthesia, rotary cleaning and shaping of the canals, filling of the canals and a temporary or basic filling. Crowns, CBCT scans and re-treatment of old root canals cost extra, and the price can be higher for molars with 3–4 canals.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

➤ How much does a root canal cost in India?
A root canal in India starts from about USD 79 per tooth. Molars with more canals cost about USD 100–150, and a root canal with a crown costs about USD 200–450 depending on the crown. This is much less than USD 1,000–1,500 in the USA.
➤ Is root canal treatment painful?
No – with local anaesthesia it feels like a normal filling. Most patients feel much less pain after the treatment than before. Mild soreness for 1–3 days is normal.
➤ How many visits are needed?
Many teeth are finished in a single visit of 60–90 minutes. Teeth with abscess or heavy infection usually need 2–3 visits a few days apart.
➤ How long do I need to stay in India?
About 3–5 days for root canal alone, or 5–7 days if you also want a crown. No hospital stay is needed; you go back to your hotel the same day.
➤ What is the success rate?
About 86–93% of root-canal-treated teeth last many years. Success is higher when a crown is placed on back teeth soon after treatment.
➤ Do I need a crown after a root canal?
Back teeth (premolars and molars) usually need a crown because they become weaker and may crack. Front teeth often only need a good filling. Your dentist will advise you.
➤ Is it better to remove the tooth instead?
Saving your natural tooth is usually better and cheaper than extraction followed by an implant or bridge. Extraction is advised only when the tooth is too broken or the root is cracked.
➤ Can I eat after the treatment?
Wait until the numbness wears off (2–3 hours). Then eat soft food and avoid chewing hard food on that side until the final filling or crown is in place.
➤ When can I return to work?
Most people go back to work the same day or the next day. There is no need for bed rest.
➤ Can children have root canal treatment?
Yes. Milk teeth can have a simpler treatment called pulpectomy or pulpotomy, done by a children's dentist. Permanent teeth in teenagers are treated like adult teeth.
➤ What are the risks?
Risks are low. Short-term soreness is common; about 5–10% have a flare-up of pain or swelling. Over time about 5–15% of teeth may need re-treatment.
➤ Can my family member come with me, and do I need a visa?
Yes, you can bring an attendant. For dental treatment you can travel on an Indian Medical e-Visa, and Satyug Healthcare provides the invitation letter and airport pick-up.
➤ What reports should I send for a free opinion?
Send clear photos of your teeth, any dental X-ray or CBCT, details of your pain and your medical history. We reply with a dentist's opinion and cost estimate in 48–72 hours.
➤ What follow-up do I need after going home?
See your local dentist for a check-up and X-ray after 6–12 months. Our partner dentists can also review your X-rays online if you have any problem.
