📖 What is Penectomy?

Penile cancer is an uncommon cancer that starts in the skin or tissues of the penis, most often on the head (glans) or foreskin. Almost all are squamous cell carcinomas. Risk factors include not being circumcised with poor hygiene or phimosis (tight foreskin), HPV infection, smoking and older age. It usually begins as a sore, lump or patch that does not heal, and can spread to lymph nodes in the groin.

Penectomy is surgery to remove the cancer. In a partial penectomy only the affected part is removed with a safe margin, keeping enough length for standing urination and often sexual function. In a total penectomy the whole penis is removed and a new urine opening (perineal urethrostomy) is made between the scrotum and anus. Very early cancers may be treated by smaller organ-sparing operations such as glansectomy, laser or wide local excision. Groin lymph nodes are often checked or removed at the same time or later.
