Lymphoma Treatment in India
Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphocytes, the infection-fighting white cells of the lymphatic system, and usually shows up as painless swelling of lymph nodes in the neck, armpit or groin. It is divided into Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), with many subtypes that behave differently. Most lymphomas respond very well to treatment, and many are curable with chemotherapy, immunotherapy and, in selected cases, radiotherapy or stem cell transplantation. India's accredited cancer hospitals offer PET-CT-guided treatment, affordable biosimilar drugs and experienced transplant units. Satyug Healthcare helps international patients obtain an opinion and estimate before travel and supports them throughout the course of treatment.
Cost of lymphoma treatment in India starts from USD 4500 at leading JCI / NABH accredited hospitals. Day-care chemotherapy every 2-3 weeks; total stay in India 3-5 months for a full course (4-6 weeks for transplant admission).
| Package | Cost (USD) | Room | Hospital stay |

About the Procedure
- Hodgkin lymphoma often affects young adults and is among the most curable cancers; standard first-line treatment is ABVD chemotherapy, sometimes followed by radiotherapy.
- Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), the commonest aggressive NHL, is usually treated with R-CHOP, a combination of rituximab and chemotherapy.
- Low-grade (indolent) lymphomas such as follicular lymphoma may only need monitoring at first, with treatment when symptoms or bulky disease appear.
- Other subtypes such as Burkitt, mantle cell and T-cell lymphomas need specialised, more intensive protocols.
- Treatment response is monitored with PET-CT scans, which help doctors decide whether to shorten, continue or intensify therapy.
- For relapsed disease, options include salvage chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplant, targeted drugs and, at selected centres, CAR-T cell therapy.
Purpose of the Procedure
- To achieve complete remission with no detectable lymphoma on PET-CT.
- To cure the disease wherever possible, as is often achievable in Hodgkin lymphoma and DLBCL.
- To control indolent lymphomas for many years while maintaining a good quality of life.
- To relieve symptoms such as fever, night sweats, weight loss and pressure from enlarged nodes.
- To offer a second chance of cure through stem cell transplant when lymphoma relapses.
- To protect fertility and long-term health with careful selection of drugs and radiation.
Diagnosis and Tests Before the Procedure
- Excision or core biopsy of an affected lymph node; a fine-needle aspiration alone is not enough to diagnose lymphoma.
- Histopathology with immunohistochemistry to identify the exact subtype; slides from home can be reviewed in India.
- Whole-body PET-CT scan for staging.
- Bone marrow biopsy in selected subtypes.
- Blood tests including complete blood count, LDH, liver and kidney function, and hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV screening.
- Echocardiogram before anthracycline drugs such as doxorubicin.
- Pulmonary function tests before bleomycin in Hodgkin lymphoma.
- Fertility counselling and sperm or egg preservation for young patients if desired.
Step-by-Step Procedure
- Pre-arrival review: biopsy reports and scans are reviewed by a medical oncologist or haemato-oncologist, who gives an opinion and estimate.
- Confirmation in India: the pathology is reviewed and a staging PET-CT is done if a recent one is not available.
- Treatment plan: the tumour board decides the protocol, number of cycles and whether radiotherapy will be needed.
- Port or line placement: a chemo port or PICC line may be inserted for safe drug delivery.
- Day-care chemotherapy: each cycle is given over a few hours in the day-care unit, after blood tests confirm the counts are safe.
- Interim PET-CT: a scan after 2-4 cycles assesses the response and guides the rest of the treatment.
- Completion: remaining cycles, involved-site radiotherapy or a transplant are given as planned.
- End-of-treatment PET-CT: remission is confirmed and a follow-up plan is handed over to the home oncologist.
Risks and Possible Complications
- Low blood counts that increase the risk of infection, fatigue and bleeding.
- Nausea, mouth ulcers, hair loss and changes in appetite.
- Infusion reactions to rituximab, usually during the first dose and managed with pre-medication.
- Nerve tingling (neuropathy) from vincristine.
- Heart effects from anthracyclines and lung effects from bleomycin, which is why monitoring tests are done.
- Reactivation of hepatitis B in carriers receiving rituximab, prevented with antiviral tablets.
- Possible effects on fertility and a small long-term risk of second cancers.
Your specialist will explain the risks specific to your condition. Choosing an experienced, high-volume hospital keeps complication rates low.
Recovery and Aftercare
- Most patients stay in a hotel or guest house near the hospital and attend day care for each cycle.
- Energy usually returns gradually over 1-3 months after the last cycle.
- Patients are generally fit to fly between cycles or after completion once counts are adequate; the oncologist confirms this.
- After transplant, the patient remains near the hospital for 4-6 weeks after discharge for monitoring.
- Follow-up visits are every 3-6 months for the first two years, with scans only when clinically needed.
- A healthy diet, gentle exercise and vaccinations as advised help recovery.
