Leukemia Treatment in India
Leukaemia is a cancer of the blood-forming cells in the bone marrow, in which abnormal white blood cells crowd out the healthy cells the body needs. It is broadly divided into acute forms (AML and ALL), which progress quickly and need urgent treatment, and chronic forms (CML and CLL), which develop more slowly. Treatment in India follows international protocols and may include chemotherapy, targeted tablets, immunotherapy and bone marrow (stem cell) transplantation. Leading haemato-oncology and BMT centres in Delhi/NCR treat large numbers of international patients, including children, at a much lower cost than in the West. Satyug Healthcare arranges the expert opinion, cost estimate, visa and on-ground support from the first consultation to the final follow-up.
Cost of leukaemia treatment in India starts from USD 8000 at leading JCI / NABH accredited hospitals. 4-5 weeks in hospital for induction; total stay in India 6-8 weeks (3-4 months for bone marrow transplant).
| Package | Cost (USD) | Room | Hospital stay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Induction Chemotherapy (AML / ALL) | 8000 USD | Twin Sharing | 4-5 weeks hospital |
| Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant (Matched Sibling Donor) | 25000 USD | Single Room (BMT unit) | 4-6 weeks hospital |
| Haploidentical (Half-Matched) Bone Marrow Transplant | 30000 USD | Single Room (BMT unit) | 5-6 weeks hospital |
Final cost depends on the hospital, room category, doctor, implants/medicines used and the patient's medical condition. Share your reports with Satyug Healthcare for a free written estimate.
About the Procedure
- Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is more common in adults and is usually treated with intensive induction chemotherapy, followed by consolidation chemotherapy or a transplant.
- Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is the most common childhood cancer; it is treated with a multi-phase protocol lasting about two to three years, and cure rates in children are high.
- Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) is usually controlled with daily oral tyrosine kinase inhibitors such as imatinib, which are widely available in India as affordable generics.
- Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) often needs only monitoring at first, with targeted drugs or chemo-immunotherapy started when symptoms appear.
- Bone marrow transplant replaces diseased marrow with healthy stem cells from a matched sibling, an unrelated donor or a half-matched (haploidentical) family member.
- Newer options available at selected Indian centres include targeted drugs for specific mutations, blinatumomab and CAR-T cell therapy for relapsed ALL.
Purpose of the Procedure
- To achieve complete remission, meaning no detectable leukaemia cells in the blood or marrow.
- To eliminate remaining disease (minimal residual disease) and prevent relapse through consolidation or maintenance therapy.
- To offer a potential cure through bone marrow transplantation for high-risk or relapsed leukaemia.
- To control chronic leukaemia long term with targeted tablets so that patients can live a normal life.
- To restore normal blood counts and reduce infections, bleeding and fatigue.
- To give children the best chance of cure while limiting long-term side effects.
Diagnosis and Tests Before the Procedure
- Complete blood count and peripheral smear to look for abnormal blast cells.
- Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, the key test to confirm and classify leukaemia.
- Flow cytometry (immunophenotyping) to identify the exact type of leukaemia cell.
- Cytogenetics, FISH and molecular tests such as BCR-ABL, FLT3 and NPM1 to define risk and guide targeted therapy.
- Lumbar puncture to check whether leukaemia has spread to the spinal fluid, especially in ALL.
- Liver and kidney function, coagulation profile, viral markers and chest imaging.
- Echocardiography to check heart function before certain chemotherapy drugs.
- HLA typing of the patient and siblings if a transplant may be needed.
Step-by-Step Procedure
- Expert review: reports are sent in advance to a haemato-oncologist, who gives a written opinion and estimate.
- Admission and confirmation: on arrival the diagnosis is confirmed with bone marrow tests and the risk group is assigned.
- Central line: a PICC line or central venous catheter is inserted to give chemotherapy and draw blood safely.
- Induction chemotherapy: intensive drugs are given over about a week (AML) or several weeks (ALL), with intrathecal chemotherapy where required.
- Supportive care: blood and platelet transfusions, antibiotics, antifungals and nutrition support are provided while counts are low.
- Remission assessment: a repeat bone marrow test with MRD measurement is done at the end of induction, usually around day 28.
- Consolidation or transplant: further chemotherapy cycles are given, or the patient proceeds to bone marrow transplant if high risk.
- Discharge and maintenance: once counts recover, the patient is discharged with a clear schedule; ALL maintenance tablets can often be continued at home.
Risks and Possible Complications
- Serious infections during the period of low white cell counts, which may need intravenous antibiotics or intensive care.
- Bleeding and anaemia needing transfusions of blood and platelets.
- Mouth ulcers, nausea, vomiting, hair loss and fatigue from chemotherapy.
- Tumour lysis syndrome, a metabolic imbalance when many leukaemia cells break down at once.
- Organ effects such as liver, kidney or heart strain from specific drugs.
- After transplant: graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), graft failure and viral reactivation such as CMV.
- Relapse of leukaemia, which may need further treatment.
Your specialist will explain the risks specific to your condition. Choosing an experienced, high-volume hospital keeps complication rates low.
Recovery and Aftercare
- Blood counts usually recover 3-4 weeks after induction chemotherapy.
- Patients should avoid crowds, follow food-hygiene rules and report any fever immediately.
- After a transplant, patients stay near the hospital for about 100 days for close monitoring before returning home.
- Fit-to-fly is decided by the haematologist once counts are safe and the patient is free of infection.
- Long-term follow-up includes regular blood counts, periodic bone marrow or MRD tests and vaccination after transplant.
- Children on ALL protocols usually resume school during maintenance therapy.
