📖 What is Liposuction for Lymphedema?
The lymphatic system is a network of thin vessels and glands (lymph nodes) that drains extra fluid from the tissues back into the blood. When it is damaged or poorly formed, fluid collects and the arm or leg swells – this is lymphedema. It may be present from birth or puberty (primary) or follow cancer surgery, radiotherapy, infection or injury (secondary). Over the years the trapped fluid causes the body to lay down extra fat and scar tissue, so the limb becomes hard and heavy and no longer goes down with bandaging or massage.
Liposuction for lymphedema, also called suction-assisted protein lipectomy (SAPL) or the Brorson technique, removes this extra fat and tissue through several small 3–4 mm cuts using thin tubes (cannulas). Unlike cosmetic liposuction, it removes tissue all around the limb, and a tight compression garment is worn straight after surgery and for life to keep the result. It is best for late-stage (non-pitting) lymphedema where most of the swelling is fat, not fluid.

Lymphatic microsurgery (LVA or lymph node transfer) may suit earlier, fluid-predominant cases. Liposuction is for patients who are ready to wear compression garments every day for life.

Results depend on the stage of lymphedema, how much of the swelling is fat rather than fluid, and above all on wearing compression garments every day for life. Patients who stop compression lose the benefit.
