📖 What is Genioplasty?

The chin is the front part of the lower jaw bone (mandible). Its size and position have a big effect on how the face and profile look. A small or set-back chin (retrogenia or microgenia) can make the nose look bigger and the neck look short. A long, wide or uneven chin can also unbalance the face. These problems are usually present from birth and do not change with exercise or diet.

Genioplasty (also called chin surgery or mentoplasty) reshapes the chin. In a sliding (osseous) genioplasty, the surgeon works through a cut inside the lower lip, so there is no visible scar. A precise cut is made in the chin bone (osteotomy), and the bone segment is moved forward, backward, up, down or to the side, then fixed with small titanium plates and screws. Because your own bone is moved, the result is permanent and natural. The other option is a chin implant (silicone or Medpor), which suits smaller changes.

🖼️ Understand It in Pictures

💡 In simple words
Genioplasty is surgery to reshape the chin. The surgeon either moves the chin bone forward, back, up or down, or places a chin implant. Cuts are usually made inside the mouth, so no scar shows.

🩺 Conditions Treated

⬅️
Weak or receding chin (retrogenia)
The chin is brought forward to improve the profile and jawline.
➡️
Prominent chin (macrogenia)
A large or projecting chin is set back or reduced.
↕️
Long or short chin height
Vertical length is reduced or increased for better facial proportions.
↔️
Asymmetric chin
A chin that is off-centre is moved to the midline.
😬
Lip strain on closing the mouth
Chin repositioning can improve lip closure and chin muscle strain.
🦷
Along with jaw or orthodontic surgery
Fine-tunes the profile after jaw (orthognathic) surgery or braces.

⚠️ Reasons Patients Seek Chin Surgery

  • ➤Chin looks small or set back in side profile
  • ➤Weak jawline or 'double chin' look
  • ➤Nose looks too large because of a small chin
  • ➤Chin looks too long, wide or big
  • ➤Chin is not centred with the face
  • ➤Strain or dimpling of the chin when closing lips
  • ➤Unhappy profile after braces or jaw surgery
  • ➤Wish for a more balanced, defined face
💡 Small changes may not need bone surgery. Dermal fillers can give a temporary 2–4 mm improvement, and a chin implant suits mild retrusion. If the whole lower jaw is set back with a bad bite, jaw (orthognathic) surgery with braces may be better than genioplasty alone. Patients should have finished facial growth (usually 16–18 years or older).

🔬 Tests Before Treatment

TestWhy it is done
Clinical facial analysis with photographsMeasures face proportions and plans the chin movement
OPG (panoramic dental X-ray)Shows tooth roots and the nerve canal, which must be avoided
Lateral cephalogramSide X-ray to measure chin position and plan millimetre movement
CBCT / 3D CT scan (if needed)3D planning for asymmetry or complex cases
Blood tests (CBC, sugar, clotting, viral markers)Fitness for general anaesthesia
ECG and anaesthesia check-upSafe general anaesthesia

🏥 The Procedure — Step by Step

Genioplasty (Chin Surgery) procedure steps
1
Consultation and planning
Surgeon assesses the face, photos and X-rays and agrees the planned movement with you.
2
Pre-operative tests
Blood tests, ECG and anaesthesia review; admission on surgery day.
3
General anaesthesia
You are fully asleep; a nasal breathing tube is often used.
4
Incision inside the lower lip
A cut is made inside the mouth, so there is no outside scar.
5
Exposure and marking
The chin bone is exposed, and the cut lines are marked below the tooth roots and nerve.
6
Osteotomy
A precise saw cut separates the lower chin segment.
7
Repositioning
The segment is moved to the planned position (often 4–10 mm).
8
Fixation
Titanium plates and screws hold the bone securely.
9
Closure and dressing
The mouth wound is closed with dissolving stitches and a supportive chin tape is applied.
10
Recovery and discharge
Soft diet, mouth care and pain relief; discharge after 2–3 days.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

➤ What is the cost of genioplasty in India?
Sliding genioplasty starts from about USD 3,199, including surgery, titanium plates, tests and a 2–3 day private-room stay. A chin implant is cheaper; combined procedures cost more.
➤ How long is the hospital stay?
Usually 2–3 days in a private room.
➤ How long should I stay in India?
About 8–10 days, so the surgeon can check healing before you fly.
➤ Will there be a visible scar?
No. The incision is inside the lower lip, so there is no scar on the face.
➤ Is sliding genioplasty better than a chin implant?
Sliding genioplasty uses your own bone, allows bigger and more precise changes in any direction, and has no implant to shift or get infected. Implants suit smaller forward changes and are quicker.
➤ Is the surgery painful?
You are asleep during surgery. Afterwards there is tightness and swelling for a few days, well controlled with painkillers.
➤ When can I eat normally?
Soft foods for about 2 weeks, then a gradual return to normal foods by 4 weeks.
➤ Will my lip feel numb?
Temporary numbness of the lower lip and chin is common and usually recovers in 3–6 months. Permanent numbness occurs in about 1–5%.
➤ When can I return to work?
Most people return to desk work in 7–10 days. Avoid contact sports for at least 6 weeks.
➤ Are the results permanent?
Yes. Once the bone heals (about 6–8 weeks), the new chin position is permanent.
➤ Do the plates need to be removed?
Usually no. Titanium plates stay in place for life. They are removed only rarely, if they cause problems.
➤ Can it be combined with other surgery?
Yes. It is often combined with rhinoplasty, neck liposuction or jaw surgery for a balanced profile.
➤ What is the minimum age?
Usually 16–18 years or older, after facial growth is complete.
➤ Is an interpreter available?
Yes. Satyug Healthcare provides free interpreters and visa invitation letters for you and an attendant.
