Know More About Procedure & Surgery
Dental Bone Grafting in India
Per-site jawbone grafting to rebuild bone lost after tooth extraction, gum disease or injury, so dental implants have a strong base – done by experienced oral surgeons and implantologists at accredited Indian dental clinics, at a small fraction of US, UK or Gulf prices.
📖 What is Dental Bone Grafting?
Teeth are held in the jawbone. When a tooth is lost or removed, the bone around it slowly shrinks because it is no longer used – up to about half of its width can be lost in the first year. Gum disease (periodontitis), infections, injuries and long-term dentures also cause bone loss. A dental implant is a titanium screw that replaces the tooth root, and it needs enough healthy bone around it to stay strong for many years.
Dental bone grafting adds bone or bone-like material to the jaw where it is thin or short. The graft acts as a scaffold that your own bone grows into, and is usually covered with a thin protective sheet (collagen membrane). Common forms are a socket graft (filling the hole right after extraction), ridge augmentation (widening a thin jaw) and a sinus lift (adding bone under the sinus in the upper back jaw). Small grafts are often placed together with the implant; larger ones need 4–6 months to heal first.

🩺 Conditions Treated
⚠️ Signs That You May Need a Bone Graft
- ➤Missing teeth for more than a few months
- ➤Told the bone is too thin for implants
- ➤Loose or poorly fitting dentures
- ➤Sunken gums or face near a missing tooth
- ➤Planned tooth extraction before an implant
- ➤Gum disease with loose teeth
- ➤Upper back teeth missing with low sinus
- ➤Previous failed implant
🔬 Tests Before Treatment
| Test | Why it is done |
|---|---|
| Clinical dental examination | Checks gums, bite, the gap and nearby teeth. |
| OPG (full-mouth X-ray) | A general view of the jaws, teeth and sinuses. |
| CBCT 3D scan | Measures exact bone height, width and density, and the position of nerves and sinus. |
| Gum (periodontal) assessment | Gum disease must be controlled before grafting. |
| Blood sugar (HbA1c) and blood pressure | Uncontrolled diabetes slows healing and raises infection risk. |
| Medicine review | Blood thinners and bone medicines (bisphosphonates) need special care. |
🏥 The Procedure — Step by Step

⚖️ Types & Techniques
| Technique / material | What is done | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Socket preservation graft | Graft placed in the socket immediately after extraction | Keeping bone for a future implant |
| Guided bone regeneration (GBR) | Granules plus membrane to widen or heighten the ridge | Thin ridges and defects around implants |
| Sinus lift (crestal or lateral window) | Sinus floor raised and bone added underneath | Upper back jaw with low bone height |
| Block graft (own bone) | A bone block from the chin or jaw angle is screwed in place | Large defects needing major rebuilding |
| Graft materials | Synthetic (beta-TCP), bovine xenograft (e.g. Bio-Oss), allograft or own bone | Chosen by size of defect and budget |

🌱 Recovery After Treatment
🏆 Success Rate
| Outcome | Result |
|---|---|
| Graft success (enough bone for implant) | About 90–95% |
| Implant survival in grafted bone (5–10 years) | About 90–95% |
| Sinus lift implant survival | About 90–98% |
| Bone saved by socket preservation | Much less shrinkage than an ungrafted socket |
| Healing time before implant loading | About 3–6 months |
Results depend on the size of the defect, graft material, good gum health, blood sugar control and not smoking. Smokers and uncontrolled diabetics have a higher rate of graft and implant failure.
🩹 Risks & Possible Complications
Bone grafting is a routine dental procedure; most side effects are mild.
- •Swelling, bruising and pain for 3–5 days – common
- •Loss of a few graft granules – common, usually harmless
- •Infection – about 2–5%, treated with antibiotics
- •Graft exposure or partial failure – about 5–10%, may need regrafting
- •Sinus membrane tear during sinus lift – about 10–20%, usually repaired at once
- •Temporary numbness of lip or chin – uncommon, mostly in the lower jaw
