what is a cholecystectomy surgery?
Cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder. The operation is done to remove the gallbladder due to gallstones causing pain or infection. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy—The gallbladder is removed with instruments placed into small incisions in the abdomen.
Functions of gallbladder
The gallbladder is a small hollow organ where bile is stored , which is created in the liver. Bile released into the small intestine that helps to breaks down fats into fatty acids, which is important for the digestion of food. Bile can also pass directly to the bowel from the Liver.
To store and concentrate bile
To respond to intestinal hormones (such as cholecystokinin) to empty and refill its bile stores
To contribute to regulating the composition of bile (the percentage of water, bile salts and more)
To control the flow of bile into the small intestine
To contract (secreting bile into the biliary tract and duodenum)
The contractions of the gallbladder are caused by several factors, including:
Fatty food content, combined with gastric distension (outpouching of the stomach due to a high volume of food content) The release of cholecystokinin (CCK) from the duodenum
What is Bile?
Bile is a fluid that is made and released by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. Bile helps with digestion. It breaks down fats into fatty acids, which can be taken into the body by the digestive tract. Bile acids (also called bile salts)
Symptoms of gallbladder problems
Symptoms can include:
Sharp pain in your abdomen,
Nausea and vomiting,
Yellow skin – Jaundice is the medical term for skin and eyes that look yellow. You might get jaundice if gallstones block your bile duct.
Who needs cholecystectomy surgery ?
Acute cholecystitis: Inflammation of the gallbladder that commonly occurs due to gallstones
Choledocholithiasis: A condition, wherein the gallstone travels out of the gallbladder and blocks the common bile duct, preventing the flow of bile into the small bowel. In a majority of the cases, the stone in the duct is addressed first, prior to gallbladder removal
Gallstone pancreatitis: A condition, wherein the stone travels out of the gallbladder and blocks the pancreatic duct. The pancreatitis condition is addressed first, prior to gallbladder removal
Biliary dyskinesia: A condition in which the gallbladder ejection is decreased, thus decreasing its function. A poorly-functioning gallbladder can cause indigestion and hence, sometimes, the gallbladder has to be removed
Gallbladder polyp, more than 10 mm in size
Trauma to the gallbladder
Porcelain (calcified) gallbladder; a condition that causes the gallbladder to function poorly
Gallbladder cancer is cancer that begins in the gallbladder. Gallbladder cancer is uncommon. When gallbladder cancer is discovered at its earliest stages, the chance for a cure is very good
Risks of gallbladder removal Surgery
Gallbladder removal is considered a safe operation. Complications are rare. However, every surgical procedure carries some risks. Before the procedure, your doctor will perform a complete physical examination and medical history to minimize these risks.
allergic reaction to anesthesia or other drugs
damage to blood vessels
heart problems, such as rapid heart rate, heart attack, or heart failure
injury to the bile ducts or small intestine
Laparoscopic Gallbladder Removal Procedure
You will have general anesthesia for your laparoscopic gallbladder removal. This means you are asleep during surgery. When surgery is finished, the surgeon closes your incisions with tiny stitches, staples, surgical tape or glue. These disappear as you heal, so the doctor does not need to remove them late
Fast (no eating or drinking) for at least four hours or more before surgery.
Plan for a hospital stay in case of complications.
Shower using a special, antibacterial soap.
Makes a small incision in the abdomen.
Inserts a tube with a camera at one end to find the gallbladder.
Makes other small incisions in the abdomen to insert surgical instruments.
Uses the images from the camera to guide the instruments and remove the gallbladde
Advantages of laparoscopic gallbladder surgery
Smaller incision – Several small incisions, each less than one (1) inch long, instead of a 5- to 7-inch incision for open surgery.
Less pain than after open surgery.
Quicker recovery than open surgery – You might go home the same day you have your surgery. You can also go back to regular activities more quickly.
Smaller scars than regular surgery.
shorter hospital stay
Patients usually have minimal pain and Minimal discomfort after cholecystectomy surgery
Early resumption of normal and routine activities
1. Patient require a night fasting before surgery. The intestine must be clear before the surgery. 2. Follow your surgeon instructions for any prescribed medications about your ongoing medicines and stop or continue certain medicines and supplements 3. Some preoperative investigations like blood tests, X-ray or ECG and ultrasound of the gallbladder are required before surgery.
1. Post Surgery, Patient allowed to take soft diet and liquid for some days. 2. Patient advice to stay under Doctor Observation & Follow-up for few weeks

The procedure takes about 1 to 2 hours. The surgeon makes an incision approximately 6 inches long in the upper right side of the abdomen and cuts through the fat and muscle to the gallbladder. The gallbladder is removed, and any ducts are clamped off.
You can lead a perfectly normal life without a gallbladder. Your liver will still make enough bile to digest your food, but instead of being stored in the gallbladder, it drips continuously into your digestive system.
