What is Endobronchial Ultrasound?
Endobronchial Ultrasound which is also known as EBUS is a minimally invasive and high effective procedure which is followed by the pulmonologist (trained doctors for lung surgery) to diagnose the problem in your lungs, bronchial regions, or in the lymph nodes of the chest. It is usually done to check the lung cancer or other problems in the lymph nodes of the chest. A bronchoscope is a tiny flexible tube that contains echo-emitter, tiny light, and micro camera. During the process the bronchoscope is inserted through your mouth, following by your windpipe, bronchial to the lungs. By the echo emitted the pictures of the organs are printed. It helps the doctor to diagnose the result. Sometimes they are used to take a biopsy from the lungs and lymph nodes of the chest. In short, it is just an updated version of the Bronchoscopy. In Bronchoscopy you can’t get the image of the organ near the lungs and windpipe, but in EBUS it is possible.
How long the Endobronchial Ultrasound takes?
The whole EBUS or Endobronchial Ultrasound procedure may take for four hours, including the preparation. The main procedure lasts for 30 minutes. It may differ based on the complexity.
Can I breathe during EndoBronchial Ultrasound?
Yes, you can breathe during the EBUS process, the patients with asthma or any other breathing trouble may feel hard to breathe. A gel-like fluid will be given to make you breathe easily. It may taste bitter.
How long it takes to recover from EndoBronchial Ultrasound?
After the process you may feel tired, you will be kept in the recovery or observation ward for the next 45 to 90 minutes. Your mouth may feel sore and dry for 1 or 2 days. Sometimes your voice may change during the recovery period.
Can I eat before EBUS?
No, you are not allowed to eat or take any other medicine before the 6 hours of the starting of the process. And you are not allowed to drink before 2 hours of the procedures. If you need to take medicine for diabetes or any other diseases then you should inform them to the doctor.
Can I eat after the EBUS procedure?
You shouldn't drink or eat for the first 1 or 2 hours of the recovery period. After it is advised to intake fluid foods like juice, water, soup, etc… After 1 or 2 days by your full recovery, you can return to your old diet.
Can I drink Alcohol after EBUS?
No, you shouldn’t. You are not allowed to drink alcohol for 1 or 2 more days after the EndoBronchial Ultrasound process. And you shouldn’t take any other drugs also.
Is EBUS painful?
No, you will be given 1 or 2 seductive. So you shouldn’t feel the pain, the doctor will ask whether you feel the pain in the shoulder, chest, in back. If you feel the pain you should say it to the doctor.
Will I feel asleep during the process?
You will be given seductive to make you feel comfortable, you will be in the drowsy state where you can see the process but you won't feel any pain.
Can I drive after the Endobronchial Ultrasound?

Can I return to work after EBUS?

It will normally take 2 to 3 days to get the result. If you didn’t get the results then you should call the doctor for the result.
What are the side effects of the EBUS?
You will be completely recovered from the EBUS; you may feel tired of the throat pain for the first two days. But if you feel pain more than a week then you should consult the experts to know the reason.
